CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Dipper Pines
Age: 12
Canon: Gravity Falls
Canon Point: S2E4
Character Information: GIFHG ML LMV
Personality: Twelve is a tough age. It's right on the edge of childhood and puberty, where you can choose to cling to your carefree life or forge ahead into maturity, and Dipper Pines is keen on the second path. From the moment he's shown arriving in Gravity Falls, it's clear that he wants to be taken seriously by adults. Whether it be lying about his age to fit in with teenagers or impulsively summoning zombies when government agents won't listen to him, Dipper will do just about anything to get acknowledgement and approval.
His efforts generally pay off (he gets what he wants in those two examples, for instance), but he's not able to please everyone, especially his great-uncle Stan. Stan's inexperience with handling kids already makes it hard for Dipper to communicate with him, but it's made worse through Dipper's constant attempts to convince Stan of the paranormal activity happening in Gravity Falls. For the entire first season, Stan refuses to acknowledge any weirdness that the family runs into, which frustrates Dipper to no end. In truth, that stubbornness is a trait they both share, with Stan refusing to give in and Dipper refusing to give up. The two butt heads often, but once Dipper learns that most of Stan's actions are well-intentioned, such as lying about the supernatural to protect him or being hard on him to toughen him up, he starts to understand and maybe respect his grunkle a bit more. Of course, they still have a long ways to go.
Dipper's closest friend and ally is his sister Mabel, who is in many ways his opposite and foil. Dipper is focused on growing up, while Mabel wants to hang onto her childhood as long as possible. Where Dipper tries excessively hard to get people to like and respect him (often to the point of being incredibly awkward), Mabel just does her own thing without regard to the response she gets. But even if Dipper is sometimes jealous of or exasperated by Mabel's spontaneity and gregariousness, he cares for and trusts her more than anyone else in Gravity Falls, and frequently gives up his personal victories for her sake. They're inseparable, and the unfamiliar and dangerous situations of the town have brought the two even closer together than they already were.
Once Dipper discovers the Journal, he becomes devoted to seeking out and solving the riddles it details. His initial enthusiasm for this is positive and overwhelming, but he's so dedicated to this task that he occasionally goes without sleep when he has a lead, and over the course of the series he becomes more paranoid of losing the few clues he has. This fear leads to snap decisions like making a deal with a demon, something he certainly wouldn't do unless he had no other choice. Some of these choices have disastrous consequences; thankfully, Dipper has the resources and quick-thinking (and sometimes just enough luck) to get folks out of the same situations he puts them in. Though it may seem like Dipper is forgetful of other people's safety, he always tries to do the right thing to make sure his mistakes are neither permanent nor fatal.
Essentially, Dipper is a serious, determined kid looking to find his place in the world, and that would be hard enough if he didn't also have to contend with an illuminati demon and the prospect of learning all the secrets of the universe.
